FT/FGAFree Throw Rate
Free Throw Rate is FTA divided by FGA — how often a player draws fouls relative to how often they shoot.
Formula
FT/FGA = FTA / FGAExample
A slasher with 92 FTA on 188 FGA: 92 / 188 = 0.49.
Why it matters
Drawing fouls converts a difficult shot into two free ones — typically the highest-EV outcome on a possession. FT/FGA tells you who does this often.
In depth
FT/FGA is one of the four factors of basketball success. A high rate (0.40+) signals a player who attacks the rim and gets to the line; a low rate (under 0.20) suggests a perimeter-heavy or settle-prone scorer.
Drawing fouls is a hidden efficiency: free throws are the highest-percentage shot in basketball, and they don’t cost a possession.
